An old pinfeather pen left on a finished written poemThe Thursday Children's Creative Writing Program is now in it's 4th year of operation. The program, which is diverse in teaching application, is conducive to the children's individual level and understanding of writing techniques. It enriches the children's awareness of various writing styles, themes and genres. The program is sensitive to the children's interests in writing, whilst enhancing their understanding of the underlying structures of writing processes; such as characterisation, scene setting, time, orientation and plot in story writing, including poetic style and formulae. The diversity in works created reflects a sense of freedom in the use of expressive language. The children are given clear and concise instruction, in a relaxed, fun and stimulating environment.

The aesthetics (defining concepts) in the created pieces of writing, are explicated through drama performance and by reading to the other group members. This aspect of the program forms the basis for positive group dynamics and supports the children within their broader sphere of learning and socialisation. Artistically influenced by research, visual stimuli, music, movement techniques and creative gesture, this program is at the forefront of the modern creative writing movement. Drawing on studies of dramaturgy , philosophy, social work and sociology the program is underpinned by structured formal learning practise. Hence, the young students have not only been winning places in local and national awards, learning new writing and presentation skills and developing self-confidence; they have also formed productive working partnerships and special friendships.

Dove

'Dove' is a sample of a students work, which was very highly commended in the Bell Peace competition, 2005, Cowra NSW.

A beautiful white dove,
Unfortunately means nothing on a battlefield.
Pure evil lurks around the place.
You must hear this tragic tale.
Once a cold-hearted hunter,
Seized a dove and killed her.
The other doves were devastated,
Turned on him and drove him out.
To this day,
Doves are protected for peace, and no more doves die.
